Rate My Cop?
Well, if some cops weren't such jerks, there wouldn't be a site like ratemycop.com out there. Predictably, police are furious that the public might have some sort of ability to band together to combat the police's petty tranny, abuse, misconduct, and violence. After all, police are superior to us ordinary citizens - in their eyes.
It's a vicious cycle: cops treat everyone as if they were criminals and idiots, regular people get treated like a jerk by a cop over and over again, and they begin to hate police, the police respond by being more dickly, the public tries to stand up for their rights, the police bust some heads and cover it up...
In all my encounters with police, there are only two times I can think of in which police treat people like their peers instead of like inmates. The first is when they are in public at an event, like a parade or a city day. In this case they will be polite to the adults and children. The second is when there is a camera on them, and even in this case, they prefer to steal the camera and try to destroy any evidence rather than change their behavior.
I'm not anti-police. After all it's not really their fault. Who is it who has made them who they are? Who could have a vested interest in having a publically-funded paramilitary force with experience in abusing the citizenry's rights? Why don't you think about it.
Oh, and just to top it off, here's a little story making very few headlines today: police handcuffed 4-year-olds for not taking naps. Wow. I feel safer already. Just like when they confiscated my toothpaste last time I went to the airport. Safe, Safe, Safe. Thanks, police!
